Employers in the Netherlands Introduce Expanded Loan Repayment Schemes

Categories: Education,Latest News,News from the Netherlands

Big news for Dutch employees weighed down by DUO student loans—help is officially on the way! Starting in 2025, more and more employers in the Netherlands are jumping on board with tax-free student loan repayment schemes. It’s a game-changer for anyone looking to ditch their debt faster (and with way less stress). How? By letting workers use their individual choice budgets to chip away at loans—without getting hit with income tax. It’s a move that could save employees thousands of euros over time. Think of it as your employer helping you hit “fast forward” on financial freedom.

Employers Are Stepping Up

Some big names have already joined the party. Companies like KPN, ING, ProRail, UWV, and none other than the Dutch government are rolling out these benefits. KPN is offering up to a whopping €5,000 every two years for loan repayments, while ProRail sweetens the deal with a one-time €1,500 payout. The process? Simple. Employees just submit proof of their loan payments, and bam—reimbursements land in their accounts, free of payroll tax. That’s real money back in your pocket.

Huge Savings, Real Relief

The financial perks are nothing short of impressive. Say you allocate €1,000 a year to repay a €15,000 loan. You’re looking at tax savings of roughly €530 annually—a total of €7,965 over the repayment period. Now imagine you’ve got a €30,000 loan. That’s over €15,000 saved! And those savings go well beyond just money in the bank; they come with less worry and the mental relief of tackling debt faster.

A Growing Trend

With 1.6 million people in the Netherlands carrying student debt, it’s no wonder trade unions are urging more companies to hop on board. Early adopters are already seeing the payoff. VGZ, for example, introduced this scheme in 2024 and went through their entire €200,000 budget, helping 94 employees save €2,200 each.

With more organizations getting involved every year, this innovative approach is quickly becoming a must-have benefit. If your employer isn’t offering it yet, maybe it’s time to start the conversation—after all, who wouldn’t want a little help crushing that student debt?
