Generosity on the Rise: 3/4 of Households Donate to Charity in the Netherlands

Categories: Culture,Latest News,News from the Netherlands

As the holiday season is upon us—a time known for generosity and togetherness—a heartening trend is emerging in the Netherlands. More people are opening their hearts (and their wallets) to give back. According to the Social Cohesion and Well-Being survey by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), 76% of households in 2023 reported donating to charity. That’s up from 68% in 2021 to 73% in 2022.

This survey, which spanned over a decade and included more than 22,000 participants, reveals fascinating insights into how different factors—like age, income, and even where you live—shape charitable giving across the country.

Wealth and Income Make a Difference

When it comes to giving, financial stability plays a big role. The data shows that households in the highest income bracket were 1.5 times more likely to donate than those in the lowest. To put it in perspective, 82% of top earners contributed to a cause, while only 57% of the lowest-income households did the same. A similar story unfolds with wealth—86% of millionaires reported donating, compared to 58% of those in the lowest wealth group. But no matter the amount, every act of kindness counts and helps create change.

Generosity Across Generations

Age turned out to be another key factor in giving habits. Older adults, particularly those aged 65-74, proved to be the most generous, with 80% making donations. The number was lower among younger individuals aged 15-24, at 58%. Women also edged out men slightly in giving, with 76% contributing compared to 69% of men.

Giving by Region and Community

Even where you live can influence your likelihood to give. Residents of Zeeland topped the charts as the most generous, with 76% of households contributing to good causes. In comparison, Limburg recorded the lowest at 68%. Interestingly, rural communities were found to be more giving (74%) than highly urbanized areas (68%). Maybe there’s something about the close-knit feel of smaller towns that fosters a stronger sense of community.

A Season of Kindness

This holiday season, these trends provide an inspiring backdrop for reflecting on the power of giving. Whether donating to a local charity in the Netherlands, supporting international relief efforts, or volunteering your time, there are countless ways to make a difference. And the best part? Every contribution—big or small—ripples outward, helping to uplift others and strengthen the bonds of community.

If you’re among the 76% who already give, thank you for being part of a growing movement of kindness. And if you’ve been thinking about giving for the first time, now is the perfect moment to join in and make that leap. Together, every act of generosity creates a brighter, more connected future for all.
